Element of Surprise

I have a broad palate, but whisk(e)y still remains my favorite. Usually I gravitate to boozy/stirred drinks, almost to the point of ignoring sour-style drinks. And then a drink comes along like this one and I have to look myself in the mirror and ask: what are you doing, man?? Re: it’s incredibly delicious, refreshing, and such a great way to enjoy an awesome Irish whiskey.

I think the key flavor pairing here is Irish whiskey + mandarin orange. I had a bag of them sitting on my kitchen counter and had the sense it would work nicely. A bit of Monte accentuates the orange bit while adding some seasoning/depth. The rosemary is more of a subtle accent here, and I bet this would still be nice with regular simple syrup. Seriously, give this one a go!

Recipe

  • 1.75oz Irish whiskey (@elementwhiskey, gifted)

  • 0.5oz Amaro Montenegro (@amaromontenegro_us)

  • 0.5oz rosemary syrup (see reel 4/10/23, blanch for 30 sec)

  • 1/2 mandarin orange, cut in quarters

  • 0.75oz lemon juice

  • 1 egg white

Muddle mandarin with syrup. Add remaining ingredients. Dry shake/wet shake, fine strain into double OF glass with large ice (I used a mold from @berlinzo_com, gifted). Garnish with fresh rosemary. Cheers!!
