La Royale

I interrupt your Fall/brown cocktails for a Very Pink Drink. No fear— in case you still need a reminder of the falling leaves, I have some dried roses in the shot (though they look a bit sadder in the picture than in real life, haha).

The reason for the VPD today is to highlight these gorgeous pink coupes that The Wine Savant (@thewinesavant) so kindly sent me. I’ve added the link to my bio if you want to get them for yourself!

The build is a gin sour riff, splitting the base with some unaged aquavit, allowing more herbal flavors to come in and pair with the classic strawberry+ rhubarb combo. This provided a perfect backdrop to bring in some fresh basil. The Aperol makes those fruity notes sing and the Peychaud’s draws a welcome anise note forward from the aquavit and basil.

Recipe

  • 1.25oz London dry gin

  • 0.5oz unaged aquavit (@nordenaquavit, gifted)

  • 0.5oz Aperol (@aperolusa)

  • 0.5oz rhubarb liqueur (homemade)

  • +/- barspoon simple (depending on taste)

  • 0.75oz lemon/lime juice split

  • 2 dashes Paychaud’s bitters

  • 4 basil leaves

  • 1 large egg white

Slap basil and combine with remaining ingredients. Dry shake, add ice, shake until chilled, fine strain into glass and garnish with strawberry flower (@onedrinkaday) and fresh basil. Cheers!!
