Mr. Rice Guy
Tropical | Floral | Grassy | Rice-y
So far my #sponsored content with @JaisalmerGin includes riffs on a gin & tonic and a martini. Both fun, easy, and delicious. Let’s keep the fun and delicious part but turn up the complexity with a gin-based tiki delight featuring an unusual cocktail player: rice. Please refer to my post on 5/20 for a discussion of the infusion.
Why rice? Well, basmati rice is frequently used in Indian cooking. It’s a long-grain rice with a lot of character— frequently described as nutty with some floral notes, along with some grassiness (rice is in the grass family!). My idea was to bring in the rice-infused gin and build a tropical, floral drink around it.
I split the gin base with rhum to add some tropical notes and highlight the grassiness. Floral notes come from the bitter bianco and rose nectar, and some from the cardamom syrup. Pineapple and coconut bring a distinct tropical lean and the coconut also adds richness that is so often present with the rice (think curry). The gin was a perfect base and its botanicals complemented the drink just right. It is a very tasty drink and I was blown away how present (and awesome) the rice was here!
