Peanut Boo-Ter Plop
It’s about time for a Halloween-themed drink. This one is more “treat” than “trick”, a peanut butter and chocolate themed Manhattan. The inspiration for the drink comes from @brooklynmixologist, and a few of us have decided to make a “plop-o-ween” drink (the photograph contains a “plop” of an ingredient). The last photo is more of a classic “ploppy”; the first two are… pre/post Big Ploppy?
With more time/effort I may have fat-washed some whiskey with PB, but instead went with Skrewball instead. The approach to the build was layering in an attempt to get a deeper, truer chocolate/PB profile. The additional peanut flavor comes from a super cool vodka from @dogfishhead that brings a very natural peanut flavor. The chocolate comes from chocolate bitters, a chocolate-forward rye whiskey, and cocoa-nib infused sweet vermouth (using iSi whipper, DM for details). The whole thing is balanced out with a bit of Cynar.
The result: while it leans more toward the sweeter side (it is candy inspired, after all), it is surprisingly balanced. There are distinct and rounded PB and chocolate tastes so it completes that goal. It finishes beautifully, with the Cynar bringing out the natural bitersweetness notes of the cocoa nibs.
Recipe
0.75oz peanut butter whiskey (@skrewballwhiskey)
0.25oz roasted peanut vodka (@dogfishhead)
1oz rye whiskey (@balconesdistilling)
1oz cocoa nib-infused sweet vermouth (@vermouthdolin)
0.25oz Cynar 70 (@cynarusa)
1 dash chocolate bitters (@scrappysbitters, gifted)
Combine all ingredients and stir with ice until chilled. Strain into chilled coupe and plop a Reese’s in there. Cheers!! Join us “ploppies” by using #plopoween and #ploptober!
